For the Sake of Others
Daily Bible Reading – Romans 9-12
Today’s Key Passage – Romans 9:1-5
Some say that sacrifice is the ultimate expression of love. As followers of Christ we are called to put others first and to sacrifice our own selfish desires for their betterment. Today’s key passage illustrates what love and sacrifice are all about. Paul states that he would gladly give up his own salvation if that would save his people. (9:3) He says that he would gladly be forever separated from God and spend eternity in hell if that action would guarantee the salvation of all the other people of Israel. Imagine that for a second. Think about what that looks like. To be willing to give up eternal happiness for the sake of others shows an indescribable amount of love from Paul for other people. These words provide us with a glimpse of Paul’s true heart for others, and Paul’s heart for others is a direct reflection of God’s heart for others. This is the kind of love that God feels for all people. This is not the “be nice to others and smile” kind of love. This is not the “pretend to be interested in what they are saying” kind of love. This is not the pretend love that most of us have learned to show for others when we are not having a good day. This is real, genuine Love. This is capital-L Love.
Paul felt “great sorrow and unceasing anguish in [his] heart” when thinking of the unbelievers who were not saved. (9:2) It physically hurt him to think of other people being separated from God for eternity because of his great love for them. This is the same way God feels when He thinks of the people who will be separated from Him. How does this measure up to how you feel in your heart when thinking of the unbelievers who are not saved? Do you feel great sorrow and anguish? Does it cause you physical pain to think of others being separated from God for eternity? Would you be willing to give up everything to guarantee the salvation of others, the way God did when he sacrificed His only Son for the sake of everyone else? Do you feel this same level of sacrifice for others every single second of every day? For most of us, these are tough questions to answer. I pray to our Father in Heaven to let my heart for others mirror His. I pray that He will allow me to feel pain over the things that pain Him. I pray for a heart that will allow me to sacrifice my time, money, and efforts to see others come to Christ. I pray these things daily, and I hope that you will too.
