Brothers and Sisters in Christ

Daily Bible Reading – Psalm 121; Mark 9, 10

Today’s Key Passage – Mark 9:38-41

The Body of Christ is quite diverse.  There are many different Christian denominations and all of them choose to teach the message of Jesus Christ in different ways.  Some churches utilize confessionals while others do not.  Some churches sing songs out of hymnals with an organist, while others sing modern songs with words digitally projected on screens and full bands.  Some churches believe that gifts of the spirit such as speaking in tongues are still relevant today, and others do not.  The diversity of our Christian world is broad.

Growing up, I was not taught about spiritual gifts and really did not know anything about that area of the Bible.  The Book of Acts was not a Book that I spent a lot of time reading.  I remember the first time I heard someone speaking in tongues in a church service, and I remember what my initial reaction was – I thought it was “weird”.  In fact, I was more than a little concerned about that person.  To be completely transparent, I believed that speaking in tongues was not real, and I believed that the person was just “putting on a show”.  Eventually, God showed me how closed-minded and hardhearted I was in this area, and soon I received my own personal prayer language from God.  I can now say that my original thinking about spiritual gifts was completely wrong.  I know now that this is a very real occurrence, and I am so glad that I opened my heart to receiving God’s gifts.

In our minds, it is easy to get locked into an idea of what is the right way and the wrong way to serve Christ.  It is easy to get bogged down and think, “The way we worship at my church is the best way” and that any other thinking in wrong.  It is also easy to get into a mindset of churches “competing” with each other for members.  I have heard my Pastor say many times – I am not as concerned with whether or not you choose to join this church, I am concerned that you choose to join Jesus.  As believers in Christ, as long as we are all teaching fundamental Biblical Christianity, we should not be concerned with the packaging.  Do not get me wrong, if a church is teaching something that is not Biblical, that is different.  But as long as the teachings stack up to the divine Word of God, we should all be willing to put away our differences and see each other as what we are – brothers and sisters in Christ.  When we are tied down with a single way of thinking, we can miss many of the blessings God wants to give us.  If we open our minds and open our hearts to God, He will continue to reveal himself to each of us.
