Today’s Key Passage – Matthew 11:28-30
As we go through life, we will receive many invitations. We will receive invitations to weddings, graduations, and funerals, and we will be invited to dinners, parties, and to sporting events. In today’s key passage, we see one of the greatest invitations anyone will ever receive. The invitation comes from our Lord Jesus Christ, and it is addressed to each and every one of us on this planet. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” There are times in our lives when we all feel like we just need to rest. When the world seems to be crashing down around us or when we feel weary from our journey, we long for rest, and Jesus invites us to turn to Him.
Jesus offers us two different types of rest. The first is rest from sin. Each one of us has sinned in our lives. While most of us have not robbed banks or killed people, we have still fallen short of God’s ideal. We have been unreasonably angry. We have been disobedient. We have had bad attitudes. We have not done things we knew we should have done. We have done things we knew we should not have done. We have thought things we should not have thought. We have all sinned, and with sin, we all have to deal with guilt and punishment. Fortunately, Jesus offers us a rest from our sin. On the cross, Jesus made a way for us to relieve the guilt of sin, and it was there where He took the punishment for all of our sins. He died in our place, but the good news is that He did not stay dead. He rose from the dead, and He is alive today, and He still says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
The second type of rest Jesus offers us is rest from sorrow. No matter what we might be facing, we can take it to Jesus. We can leave all of our burdens, issues, and problems at the cross of Christ. We no longer have to carry them with us. We do not have to worry. We do not have to stress. We do not have to panic. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can receive an indescribable peace in our lives. This peace comes from knowing Him. It comes from knowing that no matter what we have done or what we will do He will still love us. It comes from knowing that no matter what we face in this life, we will find a perfect peace in the next life.
Jesus has sent us a glorious invitation. He has offered to exchange all of our sins and transgressions for His perfect righteousness. He has offered to bring us an undeniable peace in every situation. He has offered us rest. Sometimes when we receive an invitation in the mail and we are not sure whether we are going to attend the event, we leave the invitation sitting on the counter until we make a decision. I pray that you will not wait to accept this invitation. I pray that you will RSVP to Jesus today. I pray that you will come to Him. I pray that you will find rest.
