Waiting on God
Daily Bible Reading – Job 17; Acts 24-26
Today’s Key Passage – Acts 24:1-27
I do not know anyone who likes to wait. We live in a society fascinated by the idea of immediate gratification. We want everything to happen RIGHT NOW. Every Monday morning, we silently (and sometimes not so silently) long for Friday. We revel in the rare instances when there is no traffic to slow us down on our way to work or back home again. When we walk into a restaurant and give our name to the host or hostess, our usual next question is “how long is the wait”. We do not like to wait. Perhaps that is why the idea of waiting on God is so prevalent in the Bible. In today’s key passage, we learn that Paul had to wait for more than two years in prison at the hands of Felix, when what he desperately wanted to do was go to Rome to preach the Gospel.
Waiting on God is one of the most critical things we can do as Christians. When we wait on God, we put our faith in Him. When we wait patiently for Him, we actively declare our dependence in Him. Verses that stress the importance of waiting on God literally fill the Bible:
“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him… Those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.” (Psalm 37:7, 9)
“I have waited for Your salvation, O Lord.” (Genesis 49:18)
“Yes, in the way of Your judgments, O Lord, have we waited for You. The desire of our soul is for Your name. With my soul I have desired You in the night. Yes, by my spirit within me I will seek You early.” (Isaiah 26:8-9)
“It is good that one should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.” (Lamentations 3:26)
“So you, by the help of your God, return; observe mercy and justice, and wait on your God continually.” (Hosea 12:6)
God is the sovereign ruler over the entire universe. He takes care of everything in His own time and by His own will, so sometimes we will have no choice but to wait on God. Learning to wait patiently for Him is the mark of growth as a follower of Christ. Put your faith and trust in Him every day, and wait for Him to bless you always.
