Jesus Heals

Today’s Key Passage – Matthew 8:14-22

There are many different stories in the New Testament about Jesus healing people.  He healed lepers and He healed the blind.  He cured diseases and He raised the dead.  For as many different stories of Jesus healing others, there are almost as many different responses by the people He healed.  Some people went and told others, while others kept quiet.  Some people thanked Him, while others did not.  Some people followed Him, while others simply walked away.  One of my favorite responses occurs in today’s key passage.  Jesus went to Peter’s house and saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.  Jesus, who is always willing to help others, touched her hand and the fever immediately left her.  I want to stop there for a second and really focus on the language.  Note that Jesus did not have to do any special rituals or anything like that – all He had to do was simply touch her, and when He did, she was immediately healed.  She did not start to feel a little better.  She was not healed the next day.  She was immediately and instantaneously healed by the touch of Jesus Christ.  Now here is the part I really like.  Imagine for a second that you are Peter’s mother-in-law.  You are lying there in bed sick with a fever when Jesus walks in, touches your hand, and immediately heals you.  How would you respond to that?  What would you do?  Peter’s mother-in-law has the perfect response, as we read in verse 15, “she got up and began to wait on him.”  She was sick, she was immediately healed by the touch of Jesus Christ, and she immediately began to serve Him.

In Romans 10:9, we read, “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”  If you have been saved, you have felt the power of the healing touch of Jesus Christ.  Just as He walked into Peter’s house and found his mother-in-law sick in bed, Jesus also found you.  When he found you though, you were not just a little bit ill.  You were not simply lying there with a fever.  The Bible says in Ephesians 2:1 that, “you were dead in your transgressions and sins”.  You were DEAD.  And though you were dead in your sins, “because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ”. (Ephesians 2:4-5)  How will you respond to Jesus healing touch?  Will you jump up and immediately start to serve Him?  Will you serve Him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength?  If you have already been saved, I pray that you will serve the One who healed you with a single touch of your heart, and if you have not been saved, I want you to know that it is not too late.  You too can feel the joy and freedom that comes from Jesus healing touch.
