As the River Flows

Daily Bible Reading – Ezekiel 47, 48; Luke 2

Today’s Key Passage – Ezekiel 47:1-12

For the past few days in our readings, an angel of the Lord has been showing the prophet Ezekiel many things including the new temple that would be built to hold the presence of God.  In today’s passage, the angel shows him something slightly different.  Ezekiel is allowed to see a river that was flowing from the temple. (47:1)  The angel led Ezekiel into the river, and the further they went down the river, the deeper the water became. (47:3-4)  Eventually, they reached a point where the water was so high, Ezekiel could no longer cross because he would be completely submerged. (47:5)  The angel brought Ezekiel back to the bank of the river, and explained that the river flowed into the Dead Sea, which is a body of water in which no fish can live because the concentration of salt is too high.  However, at the point where the river met the Dead Sea, it turned the water fresh, cleaning it of the impurities of the salt, and allowing life to flourish. (47:8-9)

As I read and studied today’s passage, God showed me the similarities between the river and our relationships with God.  When we first begin our relationship with Him, we step into the shallow end of the river.  The longer we walk with God through this river of life, the deeper our love and understanding for God becomes.  If we walk with Him long enough and keep from straying off the path on which He takes us, we will eventually be completely submerged in His love.  Just as the river cleanses the water of the Dead Sea of salt allowing life to flourish, God cleanses us of our sins and unrighteousness.  Though we were once dead in our trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:4-5), God gives us a fresh start and allows eternal life to spring forth.  Keep walking down the river of life with God, and do not be afraid to venture into deeper waters.  It is the greatest journey you can ever take.
