Do You Know Jesus?

Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ?  Have you committed to following Him and declared Him as your Lord and Savior?  If not, you might be wondering what all of this is about.  If you are investigating Jesus and looking for answers, I welcome you and hope you find what you are looking for within these pages.  If you have ever wondered why it is important to make Jesus the Lord of your life, you have come to the right place.

The Problem

So what is the problem?  Why is it important to turn to Jesus?  It all starts with the problem of sin.  From the days of Adam and Eve, people have sinned against God.  We all do it.  We have all committed “big” sins and we have all committed “small” ones.  Every single person who has ever lived on this earth has sinned against God.  Many people think that their sins are not that bad.  They believe that since they have never killed anyone or cheated on their spouse, God will probably give them a free pass on their “minor” sins like lying or taking God’s name in vain.  The problem, though, is that God is absolutely perfect and hates all sin.  He has never sinned and never will sin, and He cannot even be in the presence of anyone who has.  If you have ever sinned even once in your life, that sin has completely separated you from God.  Imagine you are on one side of a cliff and God is on the other, and separating you is a mile-long canyon.  We are all separated from God because of our sins, and there is no way for us to get to the other side on our own.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)

God’s Solution

God does not want to be forever separated from us.  He created us for a reason, and that reason is because He loves us and wants to have a relationship with us.  He knew we needed a bridge to cross that canyon separating us, and He built that bridge for us in the person of Jesus Christ.  God himself became a man and lived a life on earth as Jesus.  He died on a cross for no other reason than His great love for all of us.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

The Payment

God is a perfectly just God, and He could not simply allow our sins to go unpunished.  Someone had to pay the price for our sins.  Instead of forcing each of us to pay the price for our own sins, Jesus took our place and received the punishment for all of our sins for us.  Jesus lived a perfect life on earth, and became the perfect sacrifice needed to pay for our sins.  Because of His sacrifice, none of us have to be separated from God.  Because of His sacrifice, we can all have eternal life with God.  He has offered us the free gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

Your Response

Understanding that God became a man and died for your sins, what should your response be to the gift He has given you?  The only appropriate response is making Jesus the Lord of your life.  He wants to be the Lord over every area of your life.  He wants to be your King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.  He paid the price for your sins, and wants to have a personal relationship with you for eternity.  He wants you to trade in all of your sinfulness and brokenness for His perfect righteousness.  So what is the price of admission?  What do we have to “do” to accept this free gift of salvation?  It is actually a lot easier than you might think.  There is no fancy ritual you have to go through to become a follower of Christ.  There is no membership card you have to apply for online.  The process of turning your life over to Jesus Christ is a simple one:

If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)

The Prayer

Do you confess that you have sinned in your life and are in need of a Savior?  Do you believe that Jesus is who He claimed to be?  Do you believe that He died on the cross for your sins, and that God raised Him from the dead and will do the same for you?  If you would like to pray now and receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, you can use this simple prayer as a guide:

“Heavenly Father, I know that I have sinned against you and that my sins separate me from you. I am truly sorry. I now want to turn away from my sinful past and turn to you for forgiveness. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe in my heart and I confess with my mouth that your Son, Jesus Christ, died for my sins, that He was raised from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become my Savior and the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”
